A backup is only as good as your ability to actually restore from it when you need to. Here's the general concepts worth thinking through ahead of time, before an emergency forces the question.
Know how to access your account without your usual device
If the device you'd normally use is the one that failed, make sure you can still sign in to your backup account from another device or browser.
Understand your restore options in advance
Some providers offer downloading files directly, while very large restores sometimes offer a physical-media shipping option — know which applies to your situation before you're in a rush.
Estimate realistic restore time
Restoring a large amount of data over an internet connection can take a while; a rough sense of how long a full restore would take helps set expectations during an actual emergency.
Test before you need to, not during
Periodically restoring a sample file (not just checking that backups run) is the only way to confirm the whole chain actually works end to end.
